They're rust buckets with crews of angry men that just want to get off and go see their families.
We all had calendars and black magic markers, and we would literally cross the days off and hope that time would speed up.
The thought of this career also sucked when I realized that we weren’t just counting down the days until Friday like most people do...
The typical schedule was 3 months out at sea, 1 month off.
I wasn’t working for the weekend, I was working for the next quarter.
And to top it off, I had just met a girl who I was falling for.
At the time, I was thinking, how could I have a relationship with this great girl when I would potentially be out at sea for 3 months straight?
It was a terrible situation.
But what really sealed the deal, was when I almost died.
I was on the early morning shift with the 2nd engineer who was a grumpy old Russian.
This guy literally refused to talk with me because I was the cadet.
That morning we had an issue with a fuel tank.

One of the fuel tanks, which is huge, had a float switch which was malfunctioning.
The float switch measures when the fuel drops to a certain level, so it was important to fix.
The grumpy old Russian engineer threw a screwdriver at me, and told me to remove it.
As I was unscrewing the device from the tank, a jolt of voltage flew up the screwdriver into my hand, and straight up my arm.
It was such a big shock that it almost knocked me off the ladder.
I returned to the engine room and told the 2nd engineer that there was still electricity running to that float switch.
He just grunted at me, and stormed out of the office.
I followed him to the fuel tank where he was already up the ladder, unscrewing the float switch like a mad man.
As I was holding the ladder, I looked up and saw sparks flying everywhere.
And then all of a sudden it was as if a bomb went off...
BOOM!
The sparks ignited the fumes within the fuel tank, and there was an explosion that literally sent the crazy engineer flying off the ladder.
Smoke rushed into the engine room, and we stumbled to a loading window for fresh air.
This is a picture of the ship I was on, and that’s the exact window we stuck our heads out of so we could breathe.

As I looked out into the sky, I saw a huge cloud of smoke drifting behind the ship as if we were sailing through a massive storm. I realized how lucky we were that the whole tank didn’t explode.
After my shift that morning, I was lying in my bed, thinking about my life, my parents, and my girlfriend. That's when I decided I can’t do this anymore.
At the time I was researching a program which was supposed to teach me how to make my website a success.
